Multiplication Attack
The Multiplication Attack Strategy is a way to teach students multiplication and give them the tools to figure out multiplication problems. This can be especially helpful if students are having a hard time remembering multiplication facts. Here are the steps to this strategy:
1. Read the problem
This is a good strategy to implement only if you know that the student can confidently count by numbers such as 2, 3, and 5. If they can, it helps them make a connection between what they know and gives them a way to figure out the multiplication problems without relying on multiplication alone.
1. Read the problem
- ex. 7 x 5 (five times seven)
- I can count by 5s!
- I I I I I I I (7)
- 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35
- When I got to the last tally mark I said "35"
- 7 x 5 = 35
This is a good strategy to implement only if you know that the student can confidently count by numbers such as 2, 3, and 5. If they can, it helps them make a connection between what they know and gives them a way to figure out the multiplication problems without relying on multiplication alone.
