Visual Spatial Organization
The Visual Spatial Organization Strategy is a way to break down text so that it can be easily placed in a visual web-like form. Here is how it is broken down:
Often students who have nonverbal learning disabilities struggle with spatial organization of material, including written text. This will help students who struggle with nonverbal learning disabilities create a visual representation of the information they read and better comprehend the text as a whole.
- Have students read one paragraph of the text
- Highlight the topic in blue
- Highlight the main idea in green
- Highlight the important details in yellow
- Have the student use it to make a web
- Draw a diamond in the center of the page, write the topic in it (highlighted in blue)
- On the top of the page have student put the main idea (highlighted in green), by using their own words
- Around the diamond the student should put the key ideas (yellow) in bubbles, using their own words
- Repeat this throughout the text. If the topic and main idea is the same for multiple paragraphs, you could put them on the same page.
