RELATE Strategy
This strategy, which is also a mnemonic device, helps students become more involved in the comprehending of classroom discussions and increase participation and contribution in the class by showing them ways they can contribute to class. It is important that a student has understanding of alert words prior to this strategy being introduced, as noting the alert words is a key part of the strategy.
REVEAL reasons
This strategy provides students with specific options on how to get involved in classroom discussions and how to share information. This will be especially helpful for students who don't know how to participate in classroom instruction.
REVEAL reasons
- listen for alert words that indicate reasons
- mentally take note of the reasons
- paraphrase them and tell them back to the teacher
- listen for alert words that indicate examples
- mentally take note of the examples
- paraphrase the examples and tell them back to the teacher
- listen for alert words that indicate comparisons
- mentally take note of the comparisons
- paraphrase the similarities/differences and tell them back to the teacher
- ask yourself if the information makes sense
- ask a question if it doesn't or you want to know more
- listen for alert words that indicate main idea
- mentally take note of what you think the main idea is
- paraphrase what you are thinking
- see if others agree/disagree and why
- ask the teacher if you have a question about what is important
- decide what you think is most important
- share what you think is the most important
- see if others agree/disagree.
